SIS alert
A SIS alert (SIS-Ausschreibung) is an entry into the Schengen Information System that flags a third-country national for refusal of entry and stay across the member states.
When Austria issues an entry ban against a third-country national, the data is entered into the Schengen Information System as a SIS alert (SIS-Ausschreibung) under Regulation (EU) 2018/1861. This is what gives an Austrian entry ban its effect throughout the Schengen area.
Border authorities and consulates in all member states can see a SIS alert for refusal of entry and stay. As a result, the person concerned may be refused entry at any external border and may have visa or residence applications rejected in other states, not only in Austria.
Because of this wide reach, having an entry ban lifted or shortened also leads to the removal or amendment of the SIS alert. A person who believes an alert is unlawful can seek to have it reviewed and deleted.
