- Entry ban An entry ban (Einreiseverbot) prohibits a third-country national from entering and staying in the territory of the member states for a defined period.
- Expulsion An expulsion (Ausweisung) is an order requiring a person to leave Austria, without the broader prohibition on re-entry that an entry ban or residence ban entails.

- Federal Administrative Court The Federal Administrative Court (Bundesverwaltungsgericht, BVwG) is the court that hears appeals against decisions of federal authorities, including immigration matters.
- Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum The Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum (Bundesamt für Fremdenwesen und Asyl, BFA) is the Austrian authority that decides on asylum and immigration measures at first instance.

- Private and family life The right to respect for private and family life (Privat- und Familienleben) under Article 8 ECHR protects a person's ties and limits when immigration measures may interfere with them.
- Proportionality Proportionality (Verhältnismäßigkeit) requires that an immigration measure be suitable, necessary and reasonable in relation to the aim it pursues.

- Residence ban A residence ban (Aufenthaltsverbot) is the measure used against EEA citizens and certain privileged third-country nationals, prohibiting their stay in Austria for a defined period.
- Return decision A return decision (Rückkehrentscheidung) is the order that obliges an unlawfully staying third-country national to leave Austria and the territory of the member states.

- Schengen area The Schengen area (Schengenraum) is the group of European states that have abolished checks at their common internal borders and share a single external border regime.
- SIS alert A SIS alert (SIS-Ausschreibung) is an entry into the Schengen Information System that flags a third-country national for refusal of entry and stay across the member states.
- Suspensive effect Suspensive effect (aufschiebende Wirkung) means an appeal temporarily prevents a decision from being enforced while the case is pending.
